James Lawrence
James Lawrence was born in New Jersey in 1781. He joined the United States Navy in 1798 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1813, he was given command of the frigate USS Chesapeake.
Lawrence's most famous battle was the Battle of Chesapeake Bay, which took place on June 1, 1813. In this battle, Lawrence's ship was defeated by the British frigate HMS Shannon. Lawrence was mortally wounded in the battle and died a few days later.
Lawrence's death made him a national hero. He is remembered for his famous words, "Don't give up the ship!"
Stephen Decatur
Stephen Decatur was born in Maryland in 1779. He joined the United States Navy in 1798 and quickly rose through the ranks. In 1815, he was given command of the American fleet in the Mediterranean Sea.
Decatur's most famous victory was the Battle of Tripoli, which took place in 1804. In this battle, Decatur led a squadron of American ships to victory over a Tripolitan fleet. Decatur's victory helped to end the Tripolitan War and secure American control of the Mediterranean Sea.
After the War of 1812, Decatur continued to serve in the United States Navy. He died in a duel in 1820 at the age of 41.
